A world record for Rahul Dravid

At the end of fourth day's play in the Lord's Test, Dravid has aggregated 1468 runs in fourth innings of Tests at an average of 44.48. This takes him ahead of Brian Lara [ Images ], who had a tally of 1,440 runs in the fourth innings of Tests.
Interestingly Dravid's average shoots up to 72.78 in successful fourth innings chases and matches where India earned a draw while batting last. India will need Dravid to play another memorable knock to bail them out today. Can he do this one more time?

King of the world: Karl Stefanovic's Sydney to Hobart win caps off a golden year

Karl Stefanovic
King of the world - Karl Stefanovic caps off a year to remember. Picture: Bird Ian
THIS has been Karl Stefanovic's year to remember: he won praise for his coverage of the Queensland floods and royal wedding, he won the hearts of TV viewers at the Logies, and now he has won the Sydney to Hobart race.
The Today Show host had a nervous wait this morning as his boat, LOYAL, was investigated over claims the crew had spied on rival boat Wild Oats XI. But today the boat was cleared of any wrongdoing, allowing Stefanovic to pick up where he left off last night.
"Thanks for all your messages folks," he tweeted. "All I can say about the controversy is 'Why did I decide to drink rum with the sailors last night'. Ouch."
The tweet was pure Karl and a reminder that it's his larrikin charm that has sent him to the top. Remember this was also the year that he told a corny pizza joke to the Dalai Lama, lost his bundle over a "stabby thing" and spoke about Today colleague Richard Wilkins' "massive c..." .

Hussey falls to Zaheer in 1st test 2nd inning

Australia were dismissed for 240 runs in their second innings before lunch, after Mike Hussey and James Pattinson resumed on 179-8, with a lead of 230, on day four of the first Test at Melbourne, on Thursday.
Hussey, who survived a dropped catch on 69 by Dravid on day three, rode his luck to beat a big caught behind appeal down the leg side but was soon out for 89, feathering a catch to wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni off a stinging Zaheer Khan delivery that moved away slightly.
Chasing 292 for victory, India's famed batting line-up failed to live up to their top billing as they were bowled out for 169 in 47.5 overs to lose the first Test by 122 runs.

India win series after Sehwag's record 219

Indore, (AFP): Virender Sehwag smashed the highest score in one-day cricket on Thursday as India flattened the West Indies by 153 runs to take a decisive 3-1 lead in the five-match series.Sehwag hammered a scintillating 219 off 149 balls to lift India to their best one-day total of 418-5, before theWest Indies were bowled out for 265 in the fourth international.

Debutant leg-spinner Rahul Sharma picked up three wickets in his first three overs as the tourists were outplayed despite a defiant 96 from wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin.

Ramdin put on 64 for the last wicket with Sunil Narine (27 not out) before he was caught in the deep attempting to score his maiden one-day century.

Sehwag plundered 25 boundaries and seven sixes during his 149-ball blitz, joining compatriot Sachin Tendulkar as the only batsmen in history to score double-centuries in the 50-over format.

Sehwag moved past Tendulkar's 200 not out - against South Africa in Gwalior last year - in the 44th over when, on 197, he cut Andre Russell to the point fence.

He was finally dismissed in the 47th over when he was caught in the deep off Kieron Pollard and was clapped off the field by the entire West Indies team and some 30,000 jubilant home fans.

Sehwag's blistering knock helped India surpass their previous highest one-day total of 414-7 against Sri Lanka in Rajkot in 2009. It was Sehwag's 15th three-figure knock in one-day cricket and the first since making 175 against Bangladesh in the opening match of the World Cup in Dhaka in February this year.

Sehwag, who is captaining India in the series in the absence of the rested Mahendra Singh Dhoni, had managed just 46 runs in the previous three matches.

But he found the right conditions on the run-laden pitch at the Holkar stadium in Indore to strike form ahead of the Test series in Australia starting later this month.

Sehwag, who was dropped on 170 by West Indies captain Darren Sammy in the covers, put on 176 for the first wicket with Gautam Gambhir (67) and 140 for the second with Suresh Raina (55).

Left-hander Gambhir, who had scored 16 runs in the series, broke the shackles to hit 11 boundaries in his run-a-ball innings during the rollicking opening stand.

The West Indies suffered a blow before the start when star batsman Darren Bravo was ruled out of the must-win game due to a hamstring strain. Bravo was replaced by Kieran Powell. The final match will be played in Chennai on Sunday.

London 2012: Olympic organizers say over 4 billion will watch opening and closing ceremonies

LONDON — London 2012 organizers say more than 4 billion people will watch the opening and closing ceremonies for next year’s Olympics and Paralympics.
About 20,000 people will perform in the four ceremonies but the local organizing committee has yet to announce the headline performers.

British media have speculated that Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr may perform.
Advertising executive Martin Sorrell says the huge audience means the ceremonies are worth $3.2 billion in advertising to Britain.
Sorrell adds that “with regards to perception of London and the UK and a tourism legacy, you could say that they will be priceless.”

Tiger Woods wins for the first time since scandal erupted

No, this isn’t a photo from the archives. Tiger Woods won a tournament today. (Robert Meggers / Getty Images)
You remember Tiger Woods on Sundays? Red shirt, jackwagons in the gallery yelling “get in the hole” with every swing, the grin, the victorious fist pump?
That guy and that scene — missing since the 2009 Australian Masters — were back today, with Woods beating Zach Johnson by one stroke in the Chevron World Challenge at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, Calif. He birdied the final two holes and finished at 10-under 278. The tournament is not a PGA Tour event; it is an 18-player invitational that benefits his foundation.

Woods, who has dealt with personal problems, a divorce, injuries, a revamped golf game and a fired caddie since a tumultous 2009 Thanksgiving auto accident just a couple of weeks after that Australian win, wasn’t sure what to call what he was feeling; he was asked whether it was “joy, satisfaction or relief.”
“It feels awesome, whatever it is,” Woods said in an NBC interview.
With the win, his first in 749 days, Woods moves from 52nd in the world rankings to 21st — still a far cry from the No. 1 spot he’s so accustomed to, but he’ll take it. At least he has something to build on.

Andy Roddick loses to David Ferrer in 3 sets; Murray advances at Shanghai Masters

SHANGHAI — Andy Roddick lost to David Ferrer 6-7 (5), 6-2, 7-6 (2) Friday, while Andy Murray eased into the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-2 win over qualifier Matthew Ebden at the Shanghai Masters.
The second-seeded Scot has won 23 of his last 24 matches since mid-August, with the only loss coming to Rafael Nadal in the semifinals of the U.S. Open. He’s attempting to win his third title in as many weeks.

( Andy Wong / Associated Press ) - Spain’s David Ferrer returns the ball to Andy Roddick of the United States during their men’s singles quarterfinal match of the Shanghai Masters tennis tournament in Shanghai, China, Friday, Oct. 14, 2011.
Ferrer had a string of errors to drop the first-set tiebreaker in his match, but he cleaned up his game in the second set, striking winners off the forehand and backhand side to break Roddick twice.
The 15th-ranked American had an opportunity to go up early in the third, but he wasted three break points on Ferrer’s first service game — and never challenged the Spaniard’s serve again.
Fifth-ranked Ferrer finished with 49 winners — twice as many as Roddick. Both players had 11 aces.
“I thought the second and third sets he played at an extremely high level and served pretty well,” Roddick said. “You know, you normally don’t count on him making a lot of first serves, hitting aces. I felt like today he did that and got himself out of trouble a couple of times.”
Felicano Lopez beat Florian Mayer of Germany 6-2, 6-4, in just over an hour to set up an all-Spanish semifinal clash with Ferrer. Mayer had ousted Rafael Nadal in straight sets on Thursday.
Murray will face Kei Nishikori of Japan, who advanced with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Alexandr Dolgopolov.
Ebden gave Murray a tough time at the start of the first set, matching powerful groundstrokes and using slices and drop shots to keep Murray scrambling. But Murray broke the Australian twice to close out the set and twice in the second set.
“I got quite tense compared with how I’ve been feeling for the last few weeks,” Murray said. “I don’t know exactly why that was. Sometimes that happens.”
Nishikori will become the highest-ranked Japanese player in ATP tour history thanks to his win over eighth-ranked Jo-Wilfried Tsonga this week. Ranked 47th, he’s projected to rise to No. 32 — beating Shuzo Matsuoka’s previous best of No. 46.
The 21-year-old Nishikori, who is coached by former top-10 player Brad Gilbert, is having his best season on tour, reaching one final and four semifinals. Nishikori, who roomed with Gilbert’s son Zachary at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Florida, said the instruction has been key to improving his game.
“He knows a lot of players. He teaches me, you know, how the top players play, how I need to play,” he said. “So it is helping me a lot.”
Murray was once coached by Gilbert, too.
“I learned quite a lot from him,” Murray said, “and hopefully I’ll be able to use some of the things I learned from him against Kei.”
Roddick had beaten Ferrer in the fourth round of the U.S. Open, after Ferrer scored an emotional win over the American two months earlier in a Davis Cup match played in Roddick’s hometown of Austin, Texas.
Ferrer also beat Roddick’s teammate, Mardy Fish, to lead Spain past the Americans on their way to the Fed Cup finals against Argentina in December.
Ferrer was nearly out of the Shanghai tournament in the last round — he had to fight off three match points against countryman Juan Carlos Ferrero before winning in three sets. With the victory, he became the fifth player to qualify for the ATP World Tour Finals next month in London.

Overhaul continues with flurry of changes

alt-tag

The Redskins traded Albert Haynesworth, above, to New England for a 2013 fifth-round draft pick.
Despite two days of major personnel changes, the Redskins take the field Friday for their first practice of training camp with a lineup still very much in flux.
Washington agreed to contracts with all of its top draft picks by late Thursday night, when it reached deals for undisclosed terms with first-round selection Ryan Kerrigan and second-rounder Jarvis Jenkins. It also added two potential starters through free agency.
But the Redskins still had roughly 20 roster spots open to fill to meet the NFL-allowed maximum of 90 players. And by shedding approximately $12.25 million of salary cap room by releasing veterans, they seemed to be positioning themselves for additional acquisitions in the coming days.
The Redskins traded Haynesworth, their biggest headache from last season, to the Patriots for a fifth-round pick in the 2013 draft. Haynesworth, who was signed in 2009 to a free agent contract that included $41 million guaranteed, clashed with Shanahan repeatedly last season and appeared in only eight games, recording 16 tackles and 21 / 2 sacks. He was suspended for the final four games of the season.
Some of the team’s locker room leaders from recent years were sent packing as well, as the Redskins informed Daniels, a 15-year veteran, and Rabach, an 11-year veteran, they were being released. Also cut were nose tackle Ma’ake Kemoeatu, wide receiver Roydell Williams, backup running backs Andre Brown and Chad Simpson, and punters Josh Bidwell and Sam Paulescu.
“They said they’re going younger,” Rabach said before reflecting on his six seasons in Washington. “The relationships that I made with all the guys on the team and those people in the building [will stand out most]. But on the field, the season Sean Taylor passed was the year that will always be with me. Those guys that were on the team and coaching staff. There were so many highs and lows. And what we did to get in the playoffs: truly special.”
The Redskins further strengthened their defense by luring Stephen Bowen away from the Dallas Cowboys with a five-year deal worth $27.5 million, including $12.5 million guaranteed. He will join Barry Cofield, signed away from the New York Giants on Wednesday, on a revamped defensive line.
“When free agency hit at 10 a.m., they called at 10:01,” Bowen said. “From there, Coach Shanahan called every day to check and see what I was going to do. The D-line coach, the defensive coordinator did, too. They kept saying they really, really liked me, and they were impressed with the way I played in the past and they really wanted me to be a part of the team. Their enthusiasm, that was the big thing.”
The Redskins also made their first addition to the offensive line by picking up guard Chris Chester, formerly of the Baltimore Ravens, for a five-year, $20 million deal, according to his agent, Craig Domann.
But as training camp gets underway, a number of questions remain for Shanahan and his coaching staff, none bigger than John Beck’s audition for the starting quarterback job.
The fifth-year veteran hasn’t taken a regular season snap since his rookie season in Miami in 2007, and spent last season as the third-string quarterback.
But he has impressed Shanahan with his work ethic and leadership skills this offseason.
With the Redskins prevented from holding minicamps at team headquarters because of the NFL labor dispute, Beck helped organized player-led workouts throughout the summer.
“He’s just basically been showing tireless effort to be out here and do the work,” wide receiver Anthony Armstrong said of Beck. “He’s flown out here from California time and time again to throw routes. I almost have to ignore his phone calls and text messages because he’s always like, ‘Wanna throw? Wanna throw?’ I’ve taken advantage of it as much as possible.
“I know he’s been putting in the work and I’ve seen improvement. I know once he gets on the field, he has to be able to go out there and execute, do it time and time again, and he’ll be successful.”
Rex Grossman started at quarterback the final three games of last season but is a free agent. Washington plans on re-signing him, but hadn’t as of Thursday evening, and so he may not even be on the field on Friday.
The Redskins also added sixth-year veteran quarterback Kellen Clemens, but he, like the other candidates, is unproven, having served primarily as a backup for the New York Jets all of his career.
The Redskins also must determine who will protect their quarterback. Trent Williams, last year’s top draft pick, is entrenched at left tackle. But the starting right tackle position remains unfilled.
Jammal Brown was acquired to play there last season, but is a free agent and weighing offers from other teams. If Brown elects to go elsewhere, the Redskins could possibly pursue the Broncos’ Ryan Harris, whom Shanahan drafted in Denver in 2007.
Free agents at other critical positions also likely will trickle in over the course of the next couple of days. The situation will be less than ideal, and none will be able to practice until Thursday, when the NFL’s new collective bargaining agreement is ratified.
But the Redskins — like their 31 counterparts around the league — are trying to make do.
“It’ll be interesting to see how all this goes,” Alexander said. “That’s a lot of key reps guys will miss out on” by not being able to take part in practices on time.
By reaching agreements with Kerrigan and Jenkins, seventh-round offensive lineman Maurice Hurt is the only one of the team’s 12 draft picks to remain unsigned. Kerrigan, taken 16th overall out of Purdue, will be making the move from defensive end to linebacker and will need as much practice as possible to help his transition.
Shanahan declined to comment on any of the Redskins’ moves this week, and hasn’t addressed members of the media since the draft.
He is scheduled to speak to reporters at 6 p.m. on Friday, after all of the team’s transactions can become finalized under NFL rules.

Staff writer Rick Maese contributed to this report.

Redskins will open training camp after a flurry of roster moves

John McDonnell/THE WASHINGTON POST - Center Casey Rabach, right, is among the eight veterans cut by the Redskins on Thursday.

The Washington Redskins made a flurry of moves Thursday, ridding themselves of Albert Haynesworth by trading him to the New England Patriots and cutting eight veterans — including center Casey Rabach and defensive lineman Phillip Daniels — as Coach Mike Shanahan continued overhauling the team’s roster.

Pak media puts Akmal in the firing line

Kamran Akmal

Bikash Mohapatra in Pallekele
There's something that is common between the Indian and the Pakistan media as regards their coverage.
The fourth estate in both the countries goes overboard praising a player after his success and over-critical of a player after his blemishes.
On Tuesday, Kamran Akmal was in the firing line yet again.
Having come under the net over the spot-fixing controversy in recent times, the Pakistani stumper was again ripped apart by his country's media for putting down two straightforward chances.
And the beneficiary of the benevolence, Ross Taylor, went on to make a spectacular hundred to help New Zealand thrash Pakistan by 110 runs.
Akmal first failed to hold to an edge (induced off Shoaib Akhtar's bowling) -- when Taylor was yet to open his account. And two balls later, he went to drop a regulation chance when Taylor had made four.
Taylor, who turned 27 on Tuesday, used his fortune to good effect scoring a massive 131 not out.
No wonder Kamran was vilified by the media. His blemishes in the controversial Sydney Test are still afresh in the mind.
"You can put the blame on anyone now that we have lost the match," admitted Waqar Younis. "But I don't think it is right to blame anyone," he added in defence of Akmal.
The Pakistan coach further went on to defend his player.
"Agreed our wicket-keeper left a lot to be desired and the chances that were dropped were sitters -- he dropped a few catches that really cost us the game -- fair enough, it was a bad day for him. But in cricket that happens," explained Waqar.

Balle Mataram - a song dedicated to the Indian cricket team

Nishant Kollu

Puja Banta
Nishant Kollu lives in New Jersey, too far away from his homeland to share the excitement around the cricket World Cup taking place in South Asia.
But that didn't stop this Andhra Pradesh-born techie from adding his bit to the celebrations. He decided to produce an anthem to his favourite sport. The result: Balle Mataram -- a pulsating track dedicated to the Indian cricket team.
Kollu got Uday Shankar, a former techie from Hyderabad to compose the music for the anthem. Bollywood lyricist Sameer penned the song that is inspired by A R Rahman's Vande Mataram.
However, his biggest feat was getting the master blaster of Bollywood singing, Sukhwinder Singh, to lend his voice to the anthem.
"I want Balle Mataram to do for the ICC World Cup 2011, what Shakira's Waka Waka did for the 2010 FIFA World Cup," said an enthusiastic Kollu.
The music of Balle Mataram is based on Raag Bhimpalas.
"Along with the classical base, the music has elements of pop with a focus on rhythm to bring out the patriotic fervour attached to cricket," said Uday Shankar, the composer.
Shankar, who is an ex-IT professional, was approached by Kollu in December 2010.
"I got a call from an NRI, who introduced himself as a music buff and die hard cricket fan .He wanted me to compose a song for the ICC World Cup 2011.The tune I created was approved over multiple online chats, e-mails and tele-conferences," revealed Shankar.

Georgetown expecting Chris Wright to return, but not for Big East tournament

A year ago, the Georgetown men's basketball team scripted a scintillating run through the Big East tournament. It won three games in three days and reached the championship game.
On Wednesday, the Hoyas begin play at Madison Square Garden, again as the tournament's No. 8 seed. This time, though, the degree of difficulty figures to be much greater without senior guard Chris Wright, who has missed the past 21/2 games with a broken bone in his left hand.
"He's progressing as we hoped he would," Coach John Thompson III said. "Obviously, he's limited in what he can do. But it's good to have him back out there and participating in parts of practice. Absolutely we are expecting him to return."
But it almost certainly won't be this week, Thompson said; the target date for his return remains the first round of next week's NCAA tournament. He did, however, say Wright returned to practice on Monday and has been participating in what he called "non-contact drills."
"I doubt very seriously if he will play this week [despite] how well his recovery is going," Thompson said. "One of the reasons he's not going to participate this week is to make [the NCAA tournament] a possibility."
The Hoyas haven't won since Wright walked off the court Feb. 23 against Cincinnati, cradling his hand. And after Georgetown lost by a season-worst 22 points Saturday in the rematch with the Bearcats, the chances of ending that skid at Madison Square Garden seem remote.
On Wednesday, Georgetown (21-9) will face Connecticut, a team it didn't beat even with Wright in the lineup. Getting 31 points from junior guard Kemba Walker, the Huskies defeated the Hoyas, 78-70, in Hartford, Conn., on Feb. 16.
Walker scored 26 points on Tuesday as ninth-seeded Connecticut (22-9) defeated No. 16 seed DePaul, 97-71, in the tournament's opening round.
But stopping Walker won't be Georgetown's only concern.
The Hoyas have averaged a meager 48 points the past three games as Wright's injury has triggered a ripple effect through the offense, which totaled 80 or more points nine times this season.
Cincinnati Coach Mick Cronin and his players said after Saturday's game that Wright's absence made it easier to press the Hoyas and, and as a result, caused Austin Freeman and Jason Clark to wear down from the mental and physical strain of bringing the ball up the floor.

Match referee Broad asked to leave field by cops

Broad was ordered out of the field by police and security who had no clue about Tuesday's warm-up game between Sri Lanka [ Images ] and West Indies [ Images ].
Even several other ICC officials were not allowed access to the R.Premadasa stadium by over zealous security staff who also prevented groundsman from doing their work.

he ICC said renovations at the stadium meant new access arrangements had to be made and it appeared that the security staff had no idea on how to handle the situation.
"We need to ensure that, in future, those arrangements are worked through thoroughly and also communicated to the relevant stakeholders," the ICC said in a statement.
"We will seek to do that in time for the next match at the R Premadasa Stadium on February 26.
"Sri Lankan media lashed out at the local authorities for messing up arrangements at the warm-up match. Some security staff also prevented press photographers taking pictures of players.

Mumbai Indians questions last-minute IPL auction changes

New Delhi, Jan 27 (IANS) Mumbai Indians Thursday shot a strongly worded letter to the Governing Council of the Indian Premier League (IPL) seeking clarification on the last-minute changes made to the auction rules for the league's fourth edition.
Nikhil Meswani, executive director of Reliance Industries, in a letter to the Governing Council asked why was the auction changed from 'selection of sets at random' to pre-decided 'order of auction list' for the January 8-9 players auction, and said there was no 'justification' in making the last-minute change.
'The primary purpose of deciding the order of auction through random draw in the auction room in the presence of the bidders is to ensure transparency and a level playing field to all the franchises so that they are not privy to the process. And no particular team receives preferred treatment,' he said.
'Any change in the auction rules process or procedures in this manner on the very last minute can have any justification if, and only if, strong justifiable and emergent reasons can be demonstrated. We see a complete absence of such reason or justification. Kindly let us know as to why and to whose instance ths change was introduced,' he said.
Meswani also asked the Governing Council to furnish series of documents, including agenda note and agenda of the meeting (Dec 17) of the IPL Governing Council in which the auction briefing was approved.
He also wanted the quorum and minutes of the same meeting and agenda note if any containing justification that necessitated the change in the presentation of the sets and rules and bye-laws of IPL relating to auction procedures.
